Dream Into Action

One of the hardest things to do in life is to dream. It’s THE biggest challenge my life and career clients work to overcome. They've forgotten or never learned perhaps the most important way to get in touch with who we are as God made us.

Face it, we’re not trained – or encouraged – to dream.  Our fathers tell us “Get your head out of the clouds, son, and get over here and help me clean out the garage”.  Mom entreats her daughter “Honey, I know it’s not your favorite, but you really need to take extra math this summer if you want to get into college.”

Dreaming doesn’t pay the bills.  Pursuing our passions is something we should do in our spare time.   Dreaming isn’t practical  -- pertaining to ordinary activities.

So, really the thing keeping us from our dreams is … ourselves.   We’re looking at an empty net.  The goalie is absent.  No one is screaming “Miss it!”.

Too many times we get energized to make a change in our lives and begin focusing on goal setting.  Wrong.  If we don’t dream first and establish what we’re passionate about, our goals are useless.  It’s like buying a racing engine without the car.  It’s absolutely no fun without a purpose.

Goals exist for only one reason:  to power our dreams.  Once we’re clear on what it is we want to become, goal setting becomes much, much simpler.

It goes something like this ~

Dream:
I want to feel and look fit; I want my body to look like I move it on a regular basis.

Goal This Week:
My goal is to exercise four times, and eat a balanced diet of no more than 1800 calories per day.

Action This Week:
I will walk for 30 minutes Monday and Wednesday.  I will work out using resistance training for 45 minutes on Tuesday and Friday.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Be sure that the one person who can stop you doesn’t.  Dream Into Action.
